Suckling

Whiptail Wallaby

A female whiptail wallaby suckles a joey almost as big as herself; much to the amusement of the tourists. He was at it for ages, leaving me to wonder at the mother's reserves of milk. The mother got impatient after a while, but the joey was very insistent.

Macropods can have two joeys; one at foot (as seen above) and another much smaller one still in the pouch. She can serve two different consistencies of milk to meet the nutritional needs of the two youngsters.

Grey Kangaroo

I find it very peaceful watching joeys suckle.

The mother's teat becomes quite elongated from the frequent suckling as the joey grows.

Red Kangaroo

Here is another joey almost as large as its mother, but still drinking from a teat.
