Terminology

Sec.8.0 In Wlko, copulation of males with males and with females is denoted by totally different vocabularies in both standard and vernacular diction, and it appears that wlkon do not as a rule regard them as the same sort of thing: certainly, they have no generic expressions corresponding to our "have sex with" or "copulate" or "make love" covering both kinds of sexual act. Instead, there is a vocabulary of terms relating to coupling with a male and ejaculating into his intestines, and a different lexicon relating to penetrating a wlkwy and ejaculating into her vagina. Perhaps a parallel would be urination and defecation which, among the wlko (as among most higher animals), are not at all thought of as "the same thing", and our terms applying to both, such as voiding, are technical vocabulary only.

 
     
  There is of course a range of terms for all these activities. There seem to be no euphemisms, strictly speaking–for example, although V. vulcus are highly affectionate and even sentimental animals, and well aware of various nuances of "love", our expression "make love", even in an unmistakable context, without explanation draws a blank; and even with an explanation the creatures remain puzzled and pronounce the phrase to be "very odd". (Fn 34) Similarly, such expressions as "sleep with" or "lie with" in our language they find confusing. "We sleep with one another all the time", was a common reaction. And: "I didn’t think you could fuck in your sleep"; and: "If ‘sleeping together’ is actually fucking, why not call it ‘fucking’ [male/female intercourse]? Or ‘making’ [male/male intercourse], whichever it is?"

While there are no euphemisms for sexual acts and organs, there are dysphemisms–terms that are "strong language", inappropriate for certain company, and so on. The sexual lexicon in use nowadays ranges from the generic to the wlko equivalent of locker-room language.

  Fn 34. One or two females only, in my experience, were intrigued by the expression. One of them said she thought it n-hh/hala-hsh ("amusing"). The usual reaction was that it was "too coarse" for mixed company, or at any rate they’d never use it around husbands or sexually active (male) offspring. One wlkwy, a crone of 160 or more–but still, after the manner of her species, a beautiful creature–said something under her breath in their language which set off a fit of giggles among the younger females, one of whom related to me (later) that the old one had said that the expression sounded altogether too much like "make a man"; and as far as she was concerned the menfolk had too many ways of talking about "that sort of thing" already.
     
  Sec.8.1 The usual term for male/male copulation, as has already been stated, translates as "making a man" (or, for short "making"). It’s also known as "giving [a wlko] a penis"–a double-entendre, since a "cold" wlko, no less than an "unripe" adolescent, is literally incapable of tumescence. (Fn 35) This expression, curiously, is not regarded as crude, apart from being avoided in front of very young children. There are hypocoristic terms for male sodomy; the one in commonest use normally means something like "poking". The cruder expressions translate as "drive his seed [SkhtuS]" ("his" = the wlko being penetrated), "make juice" or just "juice" as a verb, and–the most vulgar, strangely, which females said only once or twice in my hearing–"link (with/to)". Among males, on the other hand, "link" is the usual term, even while they definitely avoid saying it in the hearing of women or kits.

Sec.8.2 The commonest term for "ejaculate", used by both sexes, involves a common Wlko verb, nz-ktehhss, meaning "to contract with a sudden spasm; to squeeze abruptly and forcefully", and used of the testicles (though rarely with the generic term for testicles). There seems to be no straightforward way of rendering the Wlko expression in our language. Jerome’s "have a cramp in one’s scrotum" fastens on the wrong sense of nz-ktehhss. Ornstein and Kitell’s suggestion, "my/his (etc.) nuts (or balls) snapped", conveys the feel of the Wlko phrase for while remaining far from literal. ("I/he snapped", with or without mention of an organ, has the same sense, though the transitive use is decidedly and may be a mistake of observation: wlkon seem to feel that ejaculation is a spontaneous physiological event more or less beyond their control, like sneezing.)

 

Fn 35. Unlike the numerous cultures where a female mate is thought to "own" her husband’s testicles, wlko regard a man’s testes as his own, but freely speak of the penis as in some sense "shared"–a male depends on his co-mate or brother for his own potency, and he "owes" that same potency to other wlkon, most usually a co-mate or unmarried brother, of course, but also to any "cold" male at a wlkatar. A fairly common expression for one’s co-mate is "my cock", as in such surprising expressions as "Here–have you met my cock yet?"

There is no observable difference in the frequency with which a co-mate approaches his colleague to penetrate or be penetrated. The commonest formula for inviting penetration translates as "Give me my cock" (penis), and the wlko are fully sensible to the ambiguity of the expression: "giving" your co-mate your own penis, via sodomy, also "gives" the passive partner his own penis, or, more accurately, the ability to achieve penile rigor.

Other expressions I have heard between co-mates include "Drive my seed", "Link to me" (very crude), "Take my hand" (extremely crude–a reference to the "third hand" in the male wlko rectum; this is an adolescent’s phrase, rarely used by mature wlkon).

As remarked above (fn 1), "social grooming" is always a signal that the groomer wants to be penetrated.

     
  Sec.8.3 There is a special term used for the first penetration of juvenile males (a responsibility of their fathers, as already indicated, Sec.5.3), here rendered "open(ing)". Its exact sense is hard to pin down, since the word (nz-)s/shutk in other contexts means "to open (literally), to ease, to relax, to release, to unwrap, to expose". The word is a common one, but in the context of sex it is used only for the first anal penetration of adolescent males. (Fn 36) The first (virginal) penetration of a boy’s anus is called ‘breaking the twig’. All (usually two) co-fathers open their sons, but obviously only one "breaks the twig", a physical and cultural act whose importance is rivaled only by marriage.   Fn 36. Murdoch thought that a young male’s penis-sheath (or perhaps the penis itself) as well as his testicles were also spoken of as "opened". Semantically this makes reasonable sense, but in my time among the wlko I never heard "open" used of anything but the boy himself.
     
  Sec.8.4 The standard term for coupling between a wlko and a wlkwy is, of course, "fucking". (Fn 37) There are the usual synonyms analogous to our "lay", and vulgar terms–mainly a Wlko word that means "stuff" or "cram" (much cruder than "fuck"). There are also terms based on the male organ of generation, analogous to our "to pork, to hose, to eel" and so on, and similarly "to peg" and "to drill".(Fn 38)

But these are all relatively rare, because the normative social attitude of co-mates toward sex, both with one another and females, can only be described as both tender and frank. In fact, by my own observation, it is often difficult to tell whether a male and female wlko are merely hugging and caressing one another or actually copulating, so gentle, often, is the progression from affectionate embrace to intromission to climax. With adult males, anything that looks like intimacy is almost certainly sodomy, and as it progresses to the more vigorous phases, manifestly so. Adolescent (open) males do a lot of roughhousing, on the one hand, and lying quietly together on the other; but they are sexually very active, not uncommonly sodomizing one another three or four times a day. It tends to be vigorous, even athletic, and expressions of the type "make like a short-whiskers" (or, much more vulgarly, "link like a boy") is proverbial for any activity in which enthusiasm and physical vigor is more evident than skill or finesse.

The cruder sorts of discourse involving sexual acts are almost entirely in the context of male sex, and in fact, the crudest term (almost totally unheard in mixed company), "to link", is also the one most commonly used by males among themselves. Males will also refer to "slotting" a female, a term even the crudest wlko (a rebellious adolescent, say, or–reputedly–a rupellid) would hesitate to use in the hearing of a female.

Wlko speak of an erection with a variety of terms of the "hard" and "stiff" sort, naturally, usually specifically of a "wood(en)" member. But the commonest term for the (erect) male organ among the males is simply "black" (or, more floridly, "black wood"); and, since in its flaccid state the penis is completely sheathed, the expression "show black" or "be black" is easily understood as meaning "(of a male) be sexually aroused". The Wlko expression literally translated as "slip [one’s] black" or just plain "slip" means to lose an erection (mainly after ejaculation or after being sodomized). The reference is apparently to the withdrawal of the organ into its sheath.

Sec.8.5 As already indicated, a sexually mature male who is impotent is known as "cold", and losing the ability to become erect is "going cold". The usual term for sexually able, as was noted already in early field reports, is however not "hot" (though that is occasionally heard; as is also "be a man"). The commonest expression is "(be) red", which the secondary literature once speculated had something to do with the appearance of the erect penis. However, as mentioned above, wlko penises are black. The real key to this odd expression is a very common synonym of "be cold", namely "be white-bellied" or "have white testicles" (an expression used by both sexes, and clearly regarded as more genteel or tactful than "be cold"). Males, especially, will of course substitute racier synonyms, like "white nuts" (or "balls") or "white-belly", or go in for florid elaborations, such as might be translated as being "white-furred in the fucking department").

The explanation for the "red" and "white" terminology is the effect of the precopulatory sexual fluids of a sexually aroused male, known in Wlko as hkshihh, which fluids as described above flow from the penis sheath even before the erect organ itself appears, and continue to flow as long as the beast is erect. It will soak the fur of the sheath and scrotum and surrounding areas, even to the point of dripping from the scrotum and running down the insides of the thighs. The fluid, or rather mixture of fluids (Sec.4.2.1), is only very slightly yellow in color; but fur which has repeatedly come in contact with hkshihh darkens to a kind of reddish mahogany stain. This stain covers the inguinal area of the male, and is particularly deep in color on his penis sheath and scrotum. The coloration appears to be more than a mere tinting of the fur: microscopic examination indicates that the pigmentation is in the hair strands themselves; and in fact Murdoch and subsequent workers have reported being able to detect only faint chemical traces of sexual secretions even in deeply stained inguinal fur, suggesting that an actual chemical change takes place–the basic structure of some component of hkshihh undergoes some kind of still-unexplained reaction in the course of bonding with the chitinous proteins of the hair. But whatever the chemistry, the bonding is manifestly unstable: within perhaps two weeks of "going cold"–i.e., long before the stained hair strands might possibly grow out–a wlko male’s genital area will be the same creamy white coat as the rest of his chest and belly. Thus, the reproductive status of a wlko male is literally advertised to the world, and the terms in the lexicon refer to these highly visible features.

Sec.8.6 Since quantities of this hkshihh are transferred to the female’s inguinal region during coition, (co-)wives of sexually active males will also be "red". The muzzles of both male and female wlko will be somewhat "red", from grooming activity (including a male’s oral stimulation of a female’s nuptial pads in the course of copulation). In short, a visitor to a wlko family site can easily tell from the appearance of any mature animal whether the co-mates are "cold" or not.

  Fn 37. The wlko word here rendered "fuck" is not particularly crude, beyond being something you probably wouldn’t say around very young kits. I have witnessed such scenes as a six-year-old kit approaching copulating parents with some request, the female responding in a motherly way, with an absent-minded caress and a lick and something like, "Not now, dear; as soon as we finish fucking".

Fn 38. Thus reported by Kondrashin. Within six months of the intoduction of simple metal tools, according to the first-ever field report from 3- draconis, "drill" was being used as a crude synonym of "make a man". Pace Kondrashin, however, I have never heard it used of vaginal intercourse–it is in my experience strictly a synonym of "sodomize" (a male). Since it seems to be a particular favorite among sexually active juveniles, I infer that it is even cruder (or at any rate brasher) than "link".

Kondrashin also reports "to hammer" used of male/male copulation, but at least by the time of my field work, I heard it used only of copulation between monux bachelors and wlkon. Given its association with monux sodomy, it may only be that the expression is regarded as too indelicate to use in the presence of visitors.

I once heard a wlko say to his co-mate something about waiting for a female to return to the family site so he could "hide in" her. A little later his co-mate reproached him for using "such language" in front of the youngsters. The youngsters in question were sexually-active adolescent boys, whose growling and purring sodomy, practically in their father’s lap, was what had apparently put him in an amorous mood. I infer from these facts that "hide in" (nz-lsskum-ahh) a woman, as a synonym for "have vaginal intercourse", is extraordinarily vulgar. It was in any case the only time I encountered the expression.
