Puberty and Adolescence

Sec.5.1 Males. Wlkon become sexually mature at the age of nine or ten, when about 4/5ths grown. The first outward signs of this are a visible increase in the definition of the musculature (more apparent in the rupellids than the vulcids); a slight increase in the length of the neck; increased growth of the mane, both in length and in the eruption of follicles in a line extending below the neck (Sec.2.6); an increase in the length of the vibrissae; a perceptible if slight darkening of the coat; and, in the case of the rupellids, the simultaneous development of the three or more chevron markings on the arms. These developments are more or less gradual; rather more rapid is a noticeable increase in the size and prominence of the penis-sheath, which takes place over a four- or five-month period. The last token of sexual readiness is a sudden change in the appearance of the testicles: within a very short time, a week or two even, the scrotum becomes noticeably pendulous.

 
     
  This last is the basis for the usual terms in the wlko language for male puberty: the genitals (and the young male animals themselves) are known as "green" or "ripe", depending on sexual readiness (a determination reached by an inspection of the scrotum, an inspection that normally involves handling the organs, not just looking at them); and puberty is called "ripening" or "hanging (down)" (or "dangling"–the wlko word means both). (Fn 25)

The male wlko is now sexually fully developed, and upon being sodomized for the first time ("opened") is fully capable of erection, intromission, ejaculation, and fatherhood. However, wlkon of such an age perform procreative functions only very rarely indeed. Rather, for three to six years their sexual activity–which in healthy boys is practically continuous–consists of sodomizing one another. During this period they attain full growth; the mane lengthens, thickens, and darkens, as does the neck-stripe; the testicles increase in size; and there is a marked increase in the length and thickness of the neck. To the untrained eye, ten-year-old wlkon look like large, mature, and even impressively male animals–unmistakably so during the sexual act itself. But a wlko of 13 or 14 years is almost a different species: tall, rangy, well-knit, and masculine in a way that shows up their ten-year-old selves for the boys they were.

Sec.5.2 Females. Female puberty is less apparent physically. There is nothing like the breast or vulva development of certain species, or other types of dimorphic specialization (such as the shedding of the tail at puberty of the females of the felids of 3-Tau-Ceti, or the darkening of the vibrissae as among the Red Wolf morphs of this planet). However, there are some outward signs, which appear a year or two later than in the male children. The lesser is a change in the appearance of the throat-lines; while these were present from the age of perhaps two months, at puberty they become notably more pronounced. The major change is in the eye color, which passes from the pale blue of youth–a beautiful color itself, as has been commented on in the literature–to a striking deep green of sparkling chatoyance. (Perhaps half of the field reports on the wlko available to me inject personal remarks to the effect that they know few creatures more beautiful than adult female wlkwim. An opinion of this nature is out of place in a morphologue, which is not to say it can be quarreled with. I might add that the adult females have a natural grace which is fully equal to their physical charm.) As in the males, the "horsy" elongation of the female neck occurs during the eighteen months or so following sexual maturation as signaled by the change in eye-color. It is however less pronounced, and the neck is significantly less thick and more graceful.

 

Fn 25. As in all other areas of sex, the wlkon are forthright about puberty. On my first field trip, as I was chatting with the co-mates shortly after arriving in the camp of a family group, we were approached by one of the older pairs of twins still living at home.

"Look at this", said one of the co-mates, breaking off our conversation and beckoning to the boy, who came over and stood between his co-father’s knees while the the mature male put an arm around his shoulder and licked his cheek a couple of times. "There are no children, any more, believe me", he said, to the chuckling agreement of his co-mate. So saying, he reached into the boys groin area. "Look at this", he said to me, with a shake of his head as he squeezed the adult-sized penis sheath; "And these–", bouncing the snow-white furry scrotum, "–soft as ripe ksehmhhss! [See fn. 58, Appendix B.] These things get any riper and they’ll squirt right out of his cock the first time they snap! Hanging to his knees! My goodness, it was only yesterday he was green, and hard as a nut." [This was the encounter that led to the conversation about "opening" the youths, quoted in Sec.6, below.]

Note: "green" of edible fruit etc. and prepubescent males, and the color "green", are two different words in Wlko. The latter is used of pubescent females, whose eye color changes very noticeably from blue to green at sexual maturity (Sec.2.6, females). These facts have not confused field-workers, but have on occasion led to confusion in the secondary literature, e.g. Furtwängler and Czerny.

       
  Note: since male wlkon genitalia supply their own lubrication for intromission and ejaculation, there is no technical obstacle to coupling between an immature female and a sexually active male, but it is taboo, and effectively so.(Fn 26) Of course, most prepubescent females that a sexually active wlko would be likely to encounter would be (apart from his wives) his own daughters or (in the case of juveniles) his sisters. Besides, as reported in Kondrashin and Murdoch, and confirmed by my own observation, it is hard to know why a male wlko would crave the sexual favors of an immature wlkwy, since prepubescent females are sexually unresponsive.   Fn 26. It almost goes without saying that the rupellids are widely believed by vulcids to copulate freely and unashamedly with immature females, but there is no field confirmation of this, and strong reasons for doubting its accuracy.
       
  The adult female is, by contrast, highly responsive. All observers report that she is as likely as a male to initiate copulation. The most commonly approach is licking the male’s scrotum and penis-sheath, but there is an array of caresses and suggestions used by both sexes. During copulation she will lick the neck and face of her sexual partner, purring and growling continuously, digging her claws into his fur, wrapping and unwrapping her tail from around the male’s waist and thighs or even the root of the male’s tail, which at least partially has the function of holding his genital area tightly against hers–apparently to limit his movement, with an aim of postponing ejaculation and enhancing the friction of his ventral surfaces against her nuptial pads. Catching the male’s scrotum in the loop of her tail has the same effect, but see fn. 27, and many females have one or two "red" patches on the gripping surface of the tail, from looping it tightly around the male scrotum, either in the course of initiating sex, or during copulation itself. (Fn 27)

Sec.5.3 Opening: an Important Social/Physiological Rite of Passage.

"Opening" adolescent sons, that is, penetrating them anally for the first time. This is a parental duty. Early field workers naturally assumed it was a form of incestuous homosexuality, that the older males derived special pleasure from coupling with adolescent males, or perhaps to reinforce social dominance, and even referred to observed phenomena as "sexual abuse of juveniles".

 

Fn 27. The "red" comes of course from the male’s hkshihh, transferred from the fur of the scrotum to the female’s tail. Some females I observed had a patch of pale red fur near the end of their tails, from playing with the males’ genitals prior to intromission. Some had much more vivid patches, rather less than half-way down the tail, from gripping the males’ genitalia during intromission, when the whole of the males’ inguinal area would be soaking in hkshihh,

Males generally report that having to make copulatory movements against the restraining pressure of a female’s tail looped around their testicles "very beautiful", admitting that the pain involved is part of the "beauty".

Some wlkwim in my observation had patches of red fur in both places.

       
  The facts are otherwise; indeed, it is hard to imagine a more imposing monument to misprision than the foregoing. Given the reproductive imperatives of V. vulcus, it would be practically impossible for co-fathers to use their children habitually for sexual release which, in any case, is hardly a "problem"; nb the complete absence of penile masturbation among wlko males–they do not even have a word for it–in contrast to the neighboring monukhids. (Fn 28) "Rape", of either males and females, is something vulcids vaguely reproach the rupellids for, without, it seems, quite understanding why anyone would do any such thing, nor do observations by morphologists confirm the reports.

Sec.5.4 Sexual responsiveness: a comparison.

A chance remark by a wlko co-mate in a family group I was studying prompted further, casual, investigations on my part, leading to findings unlike any hitherto reported in the literature familiar to me.

Wlko are friendly creatures but somewhat bland of personality; "Jasper", a young co-mate, differed from the norm in being notably bluff and hearty. One conversation with him, to my surprise, turned into a case of the investigator investigated, when he started to ask me questions about the sexual requirements of my species. He was understandably perplexed by my explantion (in substance, that most males coupled exclusively with females, though a substantial minority of both sexes preferred a form of sexual contact similar to linking). He undertook to commiserate with me for what he misunderstood as some kind of ascetic self-denial, since, as he put it in so many words, the experiences were completely unalike.

This naturally led me to inquire further.

He explained, in substance, that the first penetration of a male’s anus was a "beautiful" experience, "when you can feel his tail with your purse [scrotum]", i.e., when fully-inserted. Every "pull", he continued [in Wlko, "pull" refers to the insertion of the penis], was "beautiful", but your mane really stood up when his "[third] hand" gripped your black. Then the "beauty" came in intense rushes, "pull by pull", and (he said) his testicles would swell to the bursting point before they "snapped". Then it was all over. At a wlkatar, he added, he’d withdraw right away, but when linking to "Ryan", his co-mate, he was too exhausted to do more than just lie there for a while, "and let my black slip" (allow his penis to withdraw into its sheath).

As for vaginal copulation, that was totally different. The only similarity, he suggested, was (in effect) psychological–the "comfort", as he put it, of sensing the "beauty" that was kindled by the sensation of his "peg" as it slid into a "snatch" or a "socket", respectively (these terms translate Wlko words for the organs that are of the utmost vulgarity for "penis, vagina, anus/rectum"). He explained that you could tell, and easily, and it was a "beautiful" feeling, though nothing like the "beauty" that "fills your whole body" a moment later. And even that was different, since the "beauty" his intromission provided the female came only as he "filled up her snatch", whereas he could sense a male wlko’s response from the first probe. Also, he added, while it "felt beautiful" to "pull" a wlkwy–by which I gathered he meant to insert his penis fully–it wasn’t nearly as definite a sensation as "pulling" a male. This accords with the anatomy of the innervation of the penis (Sec.4.2.9, above).

There was no "rushing" of "beauty" through his body when he copulated with a female, Jasper said. Rather, at first there was mostly the satisfaction (which he indicated was very satisfying indeed) of sensing the "beauty" in the female’s body. Then, as copulation proceeds, and after the female purrs loudly (i.e., experiences orgasm), he feels a slow but steady increase in "beauty" in his whole body. Surprisingly, "Jasper" characterized the experience as being similar to being sodomized, which apparently also involves a gradual increase in erotic pleasure ("beauty"), especially after you feel the male’s penis "getting big inside you" [a common way of characterizing the "third hand" effect, from the point of view of the male being penetrated], when each "pull" [thrust] adds to the erotic sensation. In both cases, said "Jasper", the feeling of "beauty" became almost unendurable, but with different dénouements: "Every time my nuts snap into a cunt", said the young man, "I think I’ve died. I really do. It’s so draining. I just about faint from the beauty. Nothing like that when Jason ["Jasper’s" co-mate] snaps into my gut. Then it’s mainly a relief. I love it. It’s so intense you can’t hardly stand it, can’t catch your breath, and then he snaps and you’re so relieved by the wonderful soothing feeling that comes then" [a reference to the phenomenon elsewhere translated here as the "bliss" following sodomy].

I asked him if he felt anything like the vaginal orgasm (for that is what it plainly was) when being sodomized, and he pondered the question. No, he said, in substance; sometimes his own eggs "spilled", but that was never as beautiful as "my nuts snapping into an ass or a cunt". But he was emphatic that being sodomized was a "beautiful" experience, from the first penetration (which, he indicated, was a unique sensation: "taking black, well, it fills my whole body with bliss"–remarkably enough, he used the same word normally used for the post-ejaculatory euphoria universally reported by sodomized males).

On the basis of this account I subsequently asked other wlkon to compare the experience of male/male vs male/female copulation. The men didn’t always feel like talking about the matter at all, but when they did, their accounts generally corroborated "Jasper’s". The subjective facts as described fit well with the details of the innervation of the wlko penis and its interaction with the anatomical features of the vagina and the male anus/rectum.

  Fn 28. My findings replicate those of Isserstädt and Wu: when I asked males if they ever made themselves ejaculate all by themselves, they seemed unable even to grasp the point of what I was talking about. Monukhids, significantly, have six or seven words for masturbation (e.g. with or without artificial lubrication; and the verb nz-ushsunk-hlukuhhst rendered in Diller’s Grammatical Sketch of Monux as "to fatigue" is, transparently, "to masturbate to exhaustion"). In addition the monukhids have a specialized lexicon of terms with such meanings as "to make one’s penis grow out of its sheath", "to manipulate one’s penis absent-mindedly", "to make oneself hard", "to work one’s penis", "to make oneself ejaculate", and similar things.
